Citizen Courses

Basic Firearms Safety to CCW, Defensive Pistol Tactics and Instructor Training.

Safearms Academy delivers a wide variety of official NRA (National Rifle Association) firearms safety, range safety officer & instructor training courses as well as the NACFI (National Association of Certified Firearms Instructors) Handgun Safety CCW Course and the AFTAC Defensive Pistol Tactics Series of courses.

Please review the following information carefully to determine the courses that are best for you and your level of firearms experience. If you are seeking a "CCW permit", and you have handgun shooting experience, you may find the NACFI Handgun Safety CCW Course to be the best fit.

NRA Firearms Safety & Instructor Training Courses

Students who are brand new to firearms will find the NRA basic firearms safety courses an excellent way to begin learning about firearms safety. NRA courses range from the NRA Basic Pistol, NRA Basic Rifle & NRA Basic Shotgun courses to the NRA Personal Protection in the Home, NRA Range Safety Officer and the NRA Instructor Training Courses for each discipline.

In many states, the NRA Basic Pistol Course delivered in its 10-hour format will meet the minimum firearms safety training requirements for a concealed carry permit. Although the NRA Basic Pistol Course is an excellent firearms safety course, which does include up to 4 hours of live-fire marksmanship-type training on a range, it does not include instruction in concealed carry issues, use of deadly force, concealed carry laws or a course of live-fire on silhouette targets. The NRA does not allow these subjects to be taught in the NRA Basic Pistol Course.

The 1-day NRA Basic Pistol course is scheduled from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM which includes range time. The other NRA basic courses vary in length from 1 to 2 days depending upon the discipline. For example, the NRA Basic Rifle course has 14 hours of instruction.

NRA Instructor Training from Safearms Academy meets and exceeds the minimum requirements set forth by the NRA and each training program varies in length depending upon the discipline(s) covered. The combined NRA Instructor Training for NRA Basic Pistol and NRA Personal Protection disciplines is a 4-day program.

More detailed information about the NRA courses can be found below on this page.

NACFI Handgun Safety CCW Course

The unique NACFI Handgun Safety CCW Course includes an Online Pre-Course Study Guide so that students can prepare for the course at home or work, on their own time and at their own pace. By studying online before attending the classroom portion of the course, class time is optimized and students with some prior handgun shooting experience will be able to complete the classroom session in about 4 to 5 hours depending upon the number of students in the class.

Since the students have read and studied the basic elements of the NACFI Handgun Safety CCW Course online in advance, such as the "book-learning" topics of handgun and ammunition components, class time can be spent teaching and/or verifying what the students really need to know, including but not limited to:

  1. Correctly & safely handle a handgun
  2. Conceal a handgun properly - holster selection, drawing safely
  3. Know where they can & can't carry it legally
  4. Understand & using deadly force
  5. CCW & deadly force laws

The online, pre-course study does NOT replace ANY of the course outline or content and everything in the course is taught in the classroom session.

AFTAC Defensive Pistol Tactics Series

The AFTAC Defensive Pistol Tactics courses are designed for students who already have, or will be getting, a concealed carry permit and for those that just want to develop real skills in how to use a handgun effectively in a defensive shooting situation.

There are several courses in the series and students are welcome to begin with the AFTAC Defensive Pistol Tactics I Course immediately after successful completion of either the NRA Basic Pistol Course, NACFI Handgun Safety CCW Course OR presentation of a valid CCW permit.

Students may take the AFTAC Defensive Pistol Tactics courses one day at a time. Some take only the first course while others go on to complete many of the courses including courses on handgun defense against multiple opponents, night shooting and anti-carjacking.
